Chapter Nineteen

Senator Abe Swartzkopf was one of the most influential senators on Capitol Hill. He’d been elected in eight landslide elections in New York and worked closely with the last six presidents. He knew how to come out on top and get his way.

“Senator,” said his longtime aide, Margaret Thiess, briefing him on the day’s upcoming busy schedule, “you have your meeting with the Senate Subcommittee on Coastal Affairs at eleven o’clock. You have lunch with the president at the White House at one o’clock and the meeting with the full Ways and Means Committee at three o’clock.” He nodded his agreement, acting as if he was distracted, but Margaret knew he had an impeccable memory.

Margaret continued, “This evening you are attending the presentation of the credentials from the new Brazilian Ambassador at the White House. The president will likely ask you to join them on the reception line because of your longtime acquaintance with their new official representative, Ambassador Joseph Morales.”

The senator listened to Meg reel off his calendar. She was always thorough and loyal, and the senator valued both of those admirable qualities.

“Senator, you are running three minutes behind schedule for a meeting with the Bipartisan Committee on Intelligence and Criminal Affairs. If you hurry you can get there before the proceedings officially begin.” The senator stood and removed his jacket hanging behind the door and slipped it over his shoulder.

“I will leave these messages on your desk for your attention when you return, Senator.”

“Anything critical?” he asked. “No family emergencies, right? Family comes first, always.”

“No, Senator, but you did have one that I put near the top that I thought it would be of particular interest.”

He picked up the pile of notes and messages and perused them until he saw a familiar name. He thumped his chest twice and told his assistant, “Call them and tell them I will be a few minutes late. Stall. I want to return this call.”

She smiled. “Of course, Senator. I thought you would want to call him.” She closed the door behind her and he picked up the phone to dial.

An alert voice answered on the other end. “Hello?”

“Hey, Dr. Jack, how the hell are you?”

“Abe. Good to hear from you. How’s the ticker?”

“Ever since you operated, Doc, and saved my life, it has been just fine. You know what they say, it takes a lickin’ but keeps on tickin’.” They both laughed.

“Keep the stress down, Abe, and it will last you even longer. Spend more time with the grandchildren and you’ll live forever.”

“I know, I know. I’ll try, but you know how Washington is.” He sat down in his large green leather chair. His wood-paneled office featured pictures of his wife, four kids, and five grandkids prominently displayed on his desk. The only nonfamily picture he had on his desk was of him and his wife, Irene, having dinner with Dr. Jack and his wife, Laura. He lifted the photo and set it back down, slowly.

“What’s up, Doc?”

“I need your help with something.
